New neofonie-funded research project DBpedia 2010

05/10/2010

We are happy to announce the start of the research project DBpedia 2010.

DBpedia [1] is a community effort to extract structured information from Wikipedia and to make this information available on the Web. DBpedia allows you to ask sophisticated queries against Wikipedia knowledge [2]. DBpedia also plays a central role as an interlinking hub in the emerging Web of Data [3]. DBpedia is developed and maintained since three years as a joined effort by the Web-based Systems group, the AKSW group at Universität Leipzig and OpenLink software.

Within the neofonie-funded DBpedia 2010 project, we will keep on improving the DBpedia Information Extraction Framework and will research methods to automatically recognize mentions of DBpedia entities in free-text. These methods will use the DBpedia knowledge base as background knowledge for disambiguation. The methods will be implemented as part of an annotation tool which will be released under an open-source license.

The whole DBpedia team is very thankful to neofonie GmbH for making this work possible with a research grant. neofonie is a Berlin-based company offering leading technologies in the area of Web search, social media and mobile applications.

Currently, Max Jakob and Pablo Mendes are working on the project.
