Psychologie x LLM
The use of LLM-based conversational agents in psychiatric diagnostics opens up new possibilities for making clinical interviews more scalable and accessible. However, the way patients disclose information is strongly influenced by design decisions, such as the design of the avatar, the chosen interaction modality, or the framing of the system. To investigate these factors systematically in experimental settings, a modular and configurable interface is required that can reliably represent different experimental conditions. The aim of this thesis is to conceptualize and develop a prototype of such an experimental interface following the Design Science Research approach.

As part of the “PSY-LLM” research project, we work closely with the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Charité. Several theses and doctoral dissertations are already being conducted within this project. In this area, we are specifically interested in psychiatric diagnostics and how they can be supported by LLMs. On the one hand, we examine how LLMs can support the diagnostic evaluation of human-led clinical interviews (e.g. SCID) between patients and psychologists: How accurate are they? Which factors influence their performance? On the other hand, we are also interested in investigating whether LLMs are capable of conducting such psychiatric diagnostic interviews with patients themselves and, for example, which aspects of chatbot design influence the quality of the resulting data. The field of Psychology x LLM is therefore very broad and offers a wide range of opportunities for thesis projects.
