Framing AI and Emerging Technologies: Perspectives, Questions, and Research Opportunities
News vom 15.07.2026
Abstract
Industries are currently being redefined by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and data-driven systems. At the same time, multiple crises—including energy crises and wars—are creating unprecedented levels of turmoil. These conditions challenge how organizations frame new technologies and products and how they attempt to create new markets, while navigating economic dilemmas—such as hyping, techno-pessimism, and techno-nationalism—as well as ethical dilemmas, including dual use, accountability of technologies, and technology-driven job losses. However, scholarship on how organizations frame innovations, and how framing contests unfold across stakeholders and contexts, remains fragmented. By bringing together distinguished innovation and organizational scholars, this PDW aims to (1) provide an overview of recent advancements in research on framing innovation in the context of AI and other digital technologies, and (2) foster dialogue on how different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches can advance future research. The PDW is linked to the Special Issue Communicating and Framing Innovation in the Era of Generative AI in the Journal of Product Innovation Management
