Ceremonial Welcome Event of the Berlin School of Economics at the School of Business and Economics

On October 4, 2022, the Berlin School of Economics (BSE) celebrated a welcome event for the new cohort of doctoral students and research associates at the Department of Economics at Freie Universität Berlin. The Berlin School of Economics is a unique joint program for young researchers at PhD and postdoc level from seven major economic research institutions of the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region (FU Berlin, TU Berlin, HU Berlin, Universität Potsdam, ESMT, Hertie School and WZB).

The event was opened with welcoming remarks by the President of Freie Universität, Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, and by the BSE spokesman, Prof. Dr. Roland Strausz (Humboldt University). The Executive Vice President of Freie Universität, Prof. Dr. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, also attended the event.

The highlight of the evening was the keynote lecture by the renowned Harvard professor Iris Bohnet on the topic “What Works: Gender Equality by Design”. Iris Bohnet is a behavioral economist focusing on questions of gender and diversity in organizations and, as a proven expert, advises universities, companies and politics on this topic (e.g. in the Gender Equality Advisory Council of the G7). Her presentation covered key insights from the latest research and from her award-winning book.

Among the more than 150 guests were professorial BSE members from the various universities and research institutions, doctoral students and research associates (post-docs and junior professors) from the BSE institutions and further members of the School of Business and Economics of Freie Universität Berlin.

Also present were more than 60 national and international scientists who took part in the "2nd Berlin Workshop on Empirical Public Economics: Gender Economics". This international workshop presented new and promising research in field of gender economics by young and senior economists. It took place at the School of Business and Economics, Freie Universität Berlin, on October 4th/5th, 2022.
