Application Requirements for Writing Your Thesis in Macroeconomics at the Macroeconomics Chair

This webpage provides information for students interested in writing their thesis in macroeconomics at the Macroeconomics Chair. Applicants need to submit a written application, indicating their interests, abilities, and language preference. The deadline for applications is October 1st for winter semester and April 1st for summer semester.

If you are interested in writing your bachelor's or master's thesis at our Macroeconomics Chair, you must submit a written application that includes a brief argument on why you want to write a thesis in macroeconomics. While a well-formulated topic proposal is not essential, it would be helpful. Please also provide information about your interests, abilities, and experience in macroeconomics, mathematics, econometrics, and working with data.

Kindly indicate whether you would like to write your thesis in English or German, as this will influence your choice of supervisor and grading. However, we highly recommend writing your thesis in English.

In addition, we are interested in your proficiency in software, specifically in spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel, statistical software such as Stata or R (or Python with the relevant libraries), and numeric computing software like Matlab or Mathematica.

Moreover, please submit your most recent transcript of records.

You can download the relevant application form from our website, which includes an Excel sheet that you should fill out with all necessary information.

We recommend that undergraduate students take at least one additional macroeconomic course, aside from the mandatory introduction to macroeconomics, before applying for a thesis at our Chair.

The deadline for submitting applications for the winter semester is October 1st, and for the summer semester, it is April 1st.

Please refer to our website for more information, including a document that provides guidance on writing a thesis or seminar paper.
