Our contemporary world is increasingly entrapped in the runaway dynamics of digitalization and the technological solutionism it is associated with. In response, I draw on ecological thinking to open new avenues on how we could think information systems differently. At the centre lies the contradistinction with the modernist style of thinking of current IS research marked by the drive to maximize at all costs. By contrast, an ecological style of thinking calls for an IS research marked by heterogeneity, change, and limits to better deal with the challenges of our contemporary world.
Bio
Attila Márton is a digital ecologist, studying the digitalization of core social phenomena at the confluence of sociology and information management. His main purpose is to propel ecosystemic thinking to make digitalization serve humanity. To this effect, he is currently exploring the co-evolutionary dynamics between platforms and their respective ecosystems, the political ecology of digital labour and AI, the sociology of digital knowledge and forgetting, and the re-decentralization of the internet.
