Managing the Dynamics of Platforms and Ecosystems HICSS Minitrack

As co-chair of this HICSS minitrack, professor Rothe invites you to submit your research until June 15th 2020. We are interested in research that focuses on the “dynamic” aspects of platforms and ecosystems. How do platforms and ecosystems change? What is the nature of their evolution? What are the mechanisms driving evolution? How do platforms and ecosystems adapt to technological, social, economic, or even political changes? How can specific platform and ecosystem actors succeed within these dynamics?

The minitrack seeks contributions that draw from diverse theoretical backgrounds such as management science, information systems, computer science, decision science, system science, organizational design, and behavioral economics to continue the scholarly exploration of concepts, theories, models, and tools for managing platforms and ecosystems. We are open to a wide set of methodological approaches including empirical research, case-based research, field studies, design science, and behavioral decision- making experiments. We encourage collaboration between academia and industry and welcome submissions from both industries and geographies.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Theories, models, and empirical studies of platform and ecosystem dynamics
  • Genesis of platforms and ecosystems, including the role of boundary resources, human relationships and data
  • Platforms and ecosystems for sustainable firm innovation
  • Platforms for digital twins
  • Evolving platform and ecosystem business models
  • Mechanisms driving the dynamics, growth, and evolution of platforms and ecosystems
  • Technological and competitive disruption in ecosystems
  • Dynamic analytics, visualization, and decision support for platform and ecosystems
  • Best practices in platform and ecosystem management
  • Orchestration strategies for platforms and ecosystem
  • Case studies of successes, failures, and unintended consequences of platforms and ecosystems
